Neuropelveology

Neuropelveology is a medical specialty combining neurosurgery and complex pelvic surgery, first described by Prof. Dr. Marc Possover in 2009. It focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting pelvic nerves, such as endometriosis, pelvic tumors, and post-surgical injuries.

💡 Nervous System and the Pelvis
The peripheral nervous system is divided into:
Somatic Nervous System: controls voluntary muscles. Key pelvic nerves include the sciatic, pudendal, femoral, and obturator nerves.
Autonomic Nervous System: regulates involuntary functions like digestion and urination, split into the sympathetic (alert responses) and parasympathetic (relaxation) systems.

💡 Key Neuropelveological Conditions
🔹 Pudendal Neuralgia: compression of the pudendal nerve, causing severe perineal pain.
🔹 Pelvic Nerve Entrapment: nerve compression due to blood vessels, tumors, fibrosis, or endometriosis, leading to chronic pain and neurological dysfunction.

💡 Neuropelveology Consultation
The evaluation includes a detailed clinical exam, neurological assessment, and complementary tests such as electromyography and MRI for accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.
